Why me? Simply put, I've been there and I get it, and I dedicate every second of our sessions to truly listening and being present for you.
Let's face it, lawyers encounter challenges daily - challenging clients, challenging management, challenging associates, challenging judges/regulators/bureaucrats, challenging opposing counsel - just to name a few. Challenge comes with the job and few lawyers would probably chosen to be lawyers without it. We thrive on challenge. You can handle challenge on your own. But add to that constant state of challenge all the other things inherent in law practice - the fear and uncertainty, the expectations (real and imagined), the social image of lawyers, the ethical dilemmas, the financial pressures, the technological pressures, the time pressures and that's when it gets difficult. So many lawyers find themselves feeling trapped, burnt out, and carrying more than they should.
Even for the rare lawyer blessed with great mentors, the most supportive partners, and an outstanding office culture, talking openly and freely about the challenges you are facing in your practice can carry risks. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person carries the risk of damage to your reputation, to your career standing, and to others' perceptions of you. With ongoing professional relationships, especially for lawyers, fear of saying too much keeps most from talking about what is really on their mind or even from talking at all.
Therapists and non-specialized coaches are certainly available to listen and help and can be effective, but when dealing with issues arise specifically in dealing with the pressures and challenges practicing of law, most have limited understanding of the profession and its unique demands. Only another lawyer can understand how draining discovery practice, unreasonable clients, and billable hour requirements can really be.
The end result: many lawyers don't say anything and keep it bottled up. And every day their sense of satisfaction and purpose erodes a little more.
My goal with the coaching I offer is to make space for all of it. To allow you the freedom to talk about and work constructively through your professional challenges. Because I have found only in the light of hearing my clients truly talk openly (many for the first time) about their struggles are they able to put them in context and begin the process of change.
You, lawyer, carry the burdens of many. I know it, I see it, and I'm here to help.
